Common Septic Repairs

Septic systems are durable but not invincible. Most repairs fall into a few categories, ranging from minor fixes to major overhauls.

Baffle Replacement

Typical Cost $150 – $500

Baffles direct flow inside the tank. When they corrode or break (common in concrete tanks with steel baffles), solids can escape into the drain field. Replacing baffles is one of the most cost-effective repairs.

Effluent Filter Replacement

Typical Cost $100 – $300

The effluent filter catches solids before they reach the drain field. Clogged or damaged filters cause slow drainage. Easy replacement, usually done during a pump-out.

Pump Replacement

Typical Cost $500 – $1,500

Systems with a pump chamber (common when the drain field is uphill from the tank) rely on an effluent pump. When it fails, wastewater can't reach the drain field. Most pumps last 7-15 years.

Drain Field Repair

Typical Cost $2,000 – $15,000

Drain field failure is the most expensive septic repair. Causes include biomat buildup, root intrusion, soil compaction (from driving over it), and hydraulic overloading. In some cases the field must be relocated entirely.

Tank Crack or Leak Repair

Typical Cost $1,500 – $5,000

Concrete tanks can crack from ground movement, tree roots, or age. Small cracks can be sealed; major structural damage usually means tank replacement. Fiberglass and poly tanks can also crack under pressure.

Pipe Repair (Inlet/Outlet)

Typical Cost $200 – $1,000

The pipes connecting your house to the tank and the tank to the drain field can crack, settle, or be invaded by roots. Symptoms include localized wet spots or sewage odor along the pipe run.

When to Repair vs. Replace

Situation Recommendation
Single component failure (pump, baffle, filter) Repair
Minor tank crack, accessible location Repair
Tank is 30+ years old with multiple issues Replace
Drain field is saturated / fully failed Replace field
Repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement cost Replace
